Overview
An off-site winery retail store licence allows a winery to sell their wine at a retail store that isn’t part of their production site.
Off-site winery retail stores located in host stores
When an off-site winery retail store is inside a host store, like a grocery store, and isn’t a wine boutique, these rules apply:
- The winery retail store must be self-contained. It must operate separately from the host store business, or any other business to whom the host store operator has leased space.
- A winery that has an off-site winery retail store licence must own or lease the space for the winery retail store.
- The winery retail store must have a separate payment system (e.g., cash register, point of sale terminal).
The winery retail store must be:
- Distinct from the host store or any other businesses that leases space from the host store.
- Located outside controlled entrances and exits of the host store, such as turnstiles and check-out counters.
- At the entrance if customers don’t have to go through a controlled entrance or exit at the host store.
Eligibility
You need a winery manufacturer’s licence to have an off-site winery retail store licence.
If you have an off-site winery retail store licence, you might be able to get a wine boutique endorsement. This would let you to have a winery retail store inside a grocery store shopping area.
